A number of keynote speakers have been announced for the International Co-operative Alliance's Global Conference and General Assembly in Cape Town. The November event will unite co-operators from around the world to discuss a ‘Co-operative Decade in Action’. 

Dr Akinwumi Ayo Adesina, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development of Nigeria

Dr Akinwumi Ayo Adesina will open the conference. Dr Adesina is spearheading major reforms to Nigerian agriculture. His passion is to use agriculture to end hunger, create wealth and jobs and drive equitable economic growth in Africa to lift millions out of poverty.

In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious YARA Prize in Oslo for his leadership in pioneering innovative approaches for improving the access of farmers in Africa to agricultural inputs and he was appointed by Ban Ki-moon as one of 17 global leaders to spearhead the Millennium Development Goals.

Mr Gilber Houngbo, ILO Deputy Director General

On behalf of the International Labour Organization, Gilbert Houngbo will be making a speech. The former prime minister of Togo will also take part in a special panel looking at the future of African co-operatives on the Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Houngbo’s career in international development and in the private and governmental sectors spans over 27 years. While prime minister from 2008-2012, the government improved the livelihoods of the Togolese people, namely in the areas of law, civil liberties, social conditions and equality, economic reform, good governance and inclusive economic growth.

Mr Paul Singer, National Secretary of Solidarity Economy in Brazil

In closing the conference, Mr Paul Singer will provide an overview of the event for delegates. The economist has presented at many events around the world on the co-operative and solidarity economies.

He has also given talks about how Brazil is embracing co-operatives through new legislation and affecting areas such as the generation of employment and income, and social inclusion.
