ICA Board Elections

Call for Board Nominations

3 June 2013

Dear Members,

We are inviting you to submit nominations for candidates for election to the Board of the International Co-operative Alliance.

This November, members of the International Co-operative Alliance and co-operators from around the world will gather in Cape Town, South Africa for our biannual conference, our first on the African continent. On 4 November 2013 the General Assembly of ICA will convene there.

Among the business items in Cape Town will be the election of the Board of Directors. ICA’s Board is comprised of the President, four Vice Presidents, two representatives of the global sectoral organisations, one youth representative, and fifteen (15) other at-large members. The sectoral organisation and youth representatives are nominated by their respective constituents. The Vice Presidents are the individuals elected by the regions as Regional Presidents. The fifteen at-large Board members and the President are nominated directly by ICA members.

We invite you to submit nominations on the accompanying Call for Board Nominations form to election.committee@ica.coop. Only member organisations of the ICA are permitted to nominate candidates and only individuals accredited to a member organisation in good standing are permitted to serve on the Board. If you are also nominating the individual for the office of President, that must be clearly indicated on the form.

Only one at-large Board member is permitted per country, i.e. the country of the President, Vice Presidents, and sectoral and youth representatives are disregarded when applying this provision. This does not prohibit more than one at-large nominee from the same country, but only the nominee from that country who receives the highest number of votes would be eligible to serve. Nonetheless, the Election Committee encourages members to attempt to resolve multiple potential nominations within the country.

Under ICA’s Bylaws, Board members serve a four-year term and are eligible for re-election. The positions are self-financing, i.e. the Board member or his or her organisation must cover costs of attending meetings. There are typically three meetings per year, held in differing global regions. There is no compensation for Board service. Meetings are conducted in English and the Board member must arrange for his or her own interpretation if necessary.

The Election Committee is especially interested in receiving nominations of women to the Board. The current Board consists of five (5) women and eighteen (18) men.

Nominations must be received by the Director-General not less than two months before the General Assembly, i.e. by 4 September 2013.

Thank you for your participation in this vital governance responsibility!

Co-operatively yours,

Hajah Armi Zainudin

Chair, Election Committee
